ARIA Music Awards

ARIA or Australian Recording Industry Association awards are given yearly for contributions in the music Industry. The award celebrates the Australian music industry, which is put on by ARIA (Australian Recording Industry Association). The event is annually held since the year 1987. It encompasses general and genre specific awards and various categories of popular awards. There are other categories like Artisan Awards and Fine Arts Awards, both held separately since 2004. There is a Lifetime Achievement Award as well as the ARIA Hall of Fame Award,  both held from 2005 to 2010 separately, but were not returned to the general category and ceremony in the year 2011. Public voted awards were introduced for the first time in 2010.

The Australian Recording Industry Association was formed by 6 leading record companies operating in Australia at that time – Festival Records, EMI, CBS, RCA, Polygram and WEA, which replaced the Australian Record Manufacturers established in 1956. Later, small record companies that represent independent label and acts, having more than 100 members, were included.

In order to be eligible for ARIA Music Awards, a music release should be available, commercially, within the given and specified year. The submitted recording should be original and unused. More than one category can be selected for a recording. However, re-released recordings and complications cannot be a part of this award.

The criteria for ARIA Music Awards are based on categories of awards. The categories are Album of the Year, Best Group, Best Male Artist, Best Female Artist, Breakthrough Artist – Release, Best Independent Release, Best Adult Contemporary Album, Best Blues & Roots Album, Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album, Best Rock Album, Best Urban Album, Best Country Album, Best Children's Album, Best Comedy Release, Best Pop Release, Best Dance Release, Song of the Year, Best Video, Best Australian Live Act and Best International Artist. The categories under Fine Arts Awards are Best Classical Album, Best Jazz Album, Best Original Soundtrack/Cast/Show Album and Best World Music Album. The other categories under Artisan Awards are Best Cover Artist, Engineer of the Year and Producer of the Year. However, one common rule is that all the albums and releases should be of that specific year.

Judging Process

The judging process of ARIA Music awards varies by the category of awards. An independent audit is done to judge the awards related to sales. The ARIA board has the responsibility for selecting the winners for awards like lifetime achievement and hall of fame etc. The voting academy that consists of unknown judges is responsible for most other awards. Voting schools judge genre categories. These schools consist of people from the specific genre.
