University of Southern Queensland

History

The University of Southern Queensland is a prominent Australian university that offers both on-campus and distance/online education programs. It was the Queensland Institute of Technology (Darling Downs) established in 1967, which eventually became the University of Southern Queensland. Initially it became Darling Downs Institute of Advanced Education, an autonomous multi-purpose college under the amended Education Act in 1971. The period between 1970- 1990 witnessed enormous growth of the institute that led to the establishment of the University College of Southern Queensland (UCSQ). The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) came into being in 1992. 

Campus

The University of Southern Queensland is centred in Toowoomba, Queensland. USQ's campuses are at Springfield and Fraser Coast.

Academic Divisions

Academic divisions within the University of Southern Queensland include two main faculties and eleven schools within it.

Faculty of Business, Education Law and Arts (BELA)

The following schools function under this faculty.

  • School of Arts and Communication
  • School of Commerce
  • School of Law and Justice
  • School of Management and Enterprise
  • School of Teacher Education and Early Childhood
  • School of Linguistics, Adult and Specialist Education

Faculty of Health, Engineering and Sciences (HES)

The schools within this faculty include,

  • School of Agricultural, Computational and Environmental Sciences
  • School of Civil Engineering and Surveying
  • School of Health, Nursing and Midwifery
  • School of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering
  • School of Psychology, Counselling and Community

USQ also hosts three research institutes and seven research centers.

Rankings

The Australian Research Council recognized research activities at USQ as world-class. As per the inSync survey, USQ hosts the number one university library in Australia. In 2010 USQ is placed as 3rd Best University to Work for in Australia.

Humanities degrees, Natural and Physical Sciences degrees and business degrees at USQ are reported to have the best overall satisfaction rating.

Scholarships

University of Southern Queensland offers a wide range of scholarships to continuing and commencing students to pursue higher education on merit basis.  It offers research scholarships as well.
