The 2019-20 Coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic was confirmed to have reached Australia on 25th January 2020 in Victoria, when a man returning from Wuhan, China, was tested positive for SARS-CoV-2.

The state governments started to shut down "non-essential" services. "Non-essential services" contains social gathering venues such as pubs and clubs but unlike other jurisdictions did not contain most business operations such as construction, manufacturing and most retail. Australian borders were shut down to all non-residents on 20th March 2020. Social distancing rules were implemented on 21st March 2020. The total number of new cases initially increased suddenly.
