Australian Development Scholarships

Australian Development Scholarships (ADS), also known as Australia Awards Scholarships are Development awards administered by the Department of foreign affairs and trade for people from developing countries. The main aim is to contribute to the students from those developed countries which are considered to be Australia’s partner countries.

Categories

Australian Development scholarships are available for training courses, vocational training, undergraduate degrees, postgraduate degrees and PHD degrees from any of the participating Australian universities and Technical and Further Education (TAFE) institutions.

Eligibility

A candidate is eligible for the Australian Development Scholarships only if she/he is a citizen of one of participating countries of Asia, Middle East, Pacific, Latin America, Africa, Caribbean countries. The opportunities provided by Australian Development Scholarships in study and research are to develop the skills and knowledge of the student so that they are able to drive change and development in their own countries.
The Award provides for a scholarship for the minimum term of study according to rules and regulations as laid down by the Australian education department.
The benefits of receiving the Australian Development Scholarship are:
  • Complete tuition fees
  • Air travel—payment of a single return, economy class airfare to and from Australia, via the most direct route
  • Establishment allowance—a single payment of a $5,000 towards accommodation expenditure, textbooks, and other study materials
  • Contribution to Living Expenses (CLE) is a fortnightly contribution paid towards basic living expenses at a rate determined by the ADS department
  • Introductory Academic Program (IAP)—a 4-6 week program prior to the commencement of formal academic studies which cover information about life and study in Australia
  • Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of the award
  • Fieldwork (research students only)—might be available for eligible research students

Award Conditions

  • Candidates interested in accepting an Australia Awards Scholarship are required to sign a contract with the Commonwealth of Australia stating that they will agree with the conditions of the scholarship.
  • The award recipients are required to leave Australia for a minimum of two years upon completion of their scholarship. Failing to do so will result in the recipients incurring a debt for the total accrued expenses of their scholarship.
  • Each country has different timelines so check the open and close dates for your country and depending upon the dates, select your country of citizenship / residency from the list of participating countries for more information regarding eligibility and priority areas.
