Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships

The Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship is funded by the Australian Federal Government and aims to give candidates from developing countries, the chance to embark on practical employment placements to expand their knowledge, understanding and insight into every day management of a business organization in Australia.
The award also aims to expand the academic experience gained by postgraduate students of Australia Awards Scholarships and Australian Leadership Award Scholarships. The key purpose of the program is to impart knowledge, skill and training to students who may deploy them in development of their home country’s business scenario.
The scholarship is currently restricted to Pacific countries and includes Cook Islands, Fiji, and Federated State of Micronesia, Kiribati, Nauru, Marshall Islands, Palau, Niue, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Samoa, Tonga, Vanuatu and Tuvalu. The students can enroll to study on a vast array of disciplines in educational institutions. The number of scholarships varies each year of each country and is largely dependent upon bilateral development with the country.
The scholarships are offered for a minimum period in which it is expected that the person can complete the academic program. The scholarship funding also includes preparatory programs (including English language training tuition), airfares and housing allowances.
 The goals of the award include:
  • Development of leadership skills to contribute to development in home country.
  • Build people-to-people links at the individual, institutional and regional levels.
  • Build bilateral development cooperation activity between Australia and participating countries.
Award Conditions:
  • Award is given to those whose course of study contributes to long-term development of their country. A list of developmental priorities is available on the website.
  • Applicants compete on merit-basis and the selection criteria is jointly decided and developed by the Australian and partner governments. The applicant must study full time and meet all course requirements.
  • The scholarship has a gender equity policy with equal scholarships given to both men and women.
  • Only nationals or residents of the participating countries can apply for the award.
  • The applicants should not have a permanent residence in Australia.
  • The applicants must meet specific criterion imposed by the Government of the home country.
  • The applicant must satisfy the host government immigration requirements.
  • The applicant must not hold any other scholarship during the period.
  • The award holder must return to the home country after completing the scholarship.

Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships (AAPS), currently restricted to Pacific countries are funded by the Australian Federal Government to help scholars undertake practical work experience in selected areas recognized by the PNG Government. AAPS prioritizes applications from youngsters and encourages female applicants and those from the remote areas of PNG.

The following are the courses included under Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships.

  • Bachelor of Midwifery
  • Bachelor of Nursing & Diploma of Nursing
  • Community Health Worker (CHW) Certificate

Eligibility criteria:

  • Only Papua New Guinea citizens are considered for the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarships.
  • You are NOT eligible if you currently avail an Australian Government Australia Award.
  • You shouldn’t have held any scholarship in any country in the last two years prior to the commencement of the Australia Awards Pacific Scholarship.
  • Australian citizens and those having a permanent resident status in Australia need not apply.
  • Similarly those who are engaged/ married to someone having an Australian citizenship/ permanent residency in Australia are considered ineligible for AAPS.

The award amount comes around $25,000 and the benefits covered include;

  • Establishment allowance (upto $1,000)
  • Insurance cover (Overseas Student Health Cover & personal and public liability insurance)
  • Living expenses
  • Pacific Leadership Workshop expenses
  • Expenses incurred in attending approved optional leadership development activities
  • PMPA Award certificate after the completion of the compulsory activities
  • Post-placement activities
