History
AXA Limited Financial Services was founded in 1816 with the name Mutuelle de L'assurance contre L'incendie. In 1978 it acquired another company Compagnie Parisienne de Garantie and changed the name to Mutuelles Unies. Again in 1982, it bought the Drouot Group and became Mutuelles Unies/Drouot. Adoption of the name AXA happened in 1985. The company acquired an American insurer The Equitable in 1991. In 1996, largest insurer of France, Union des Assurances De Paris (UAP) was purchased by Mutuelles Unies/Drouot and the company was known as AXA-UAP for some time before going back to the name AXA in the year 1999. In the same year AXA took over Guardian Royal Exchange. Acquisition of all shares of Sun Life & Provincial Holdings and leading Swiss insurance company Winterthur Group took place in 2000 and 2006 respectively.
