Macquarie Life Company started its operation in 1969 as Hill Samuel Australia (HSA), a subordinate of Hill Samuel & Co. Limited, U.K. The company’s merchant bank office in Sydney began in 1970 with just 3 employees.
After removal of government controls from financial markets in 1981, HSA began work on a plan to be converted into a trading bank. On 28 February 1985 the Federal Treasurer of Australia granted authority to HSA to be Macquarie Bank Limited (MBL). And MBL was the 2nd private trading bank to be founded in Australia during the 20th century.
The MBL took charge of all existing activities of HSA and started functioning on 1st March 1985 with a retail branch in Sydney. After a few months a trading branch opened in Melbourne and in Brisbane the branch established in November 1986.
MBL listed its completely paid ordinary shares on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) on 29 July 1996 and on 30 October 1996 it entered All Ordinaries Index of ASX with a market capitalization of about $A1.3 billion.
